A significant R50 million investment has been allocated to bolster small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) within Alexandra Township, Johannesburg East. This initiative, announced by the Gauteng Department of Economic Development, aims to stimulate local economic growth, create employment opportunities, and empower entrepreneurs within the community. The funding will be distributed through various programmes, including business development support, access to finance, and skills training.
Ms. Thandiwe Mkhize, the Head of Economic Development for the City of Johannesburg, highlighted the critical role this investment plays in the township's socio-economic upliftment. "Alexandra is a vibrant community with immense entrepreneurial potential. This R50 million injection is not merely financial; it represents a commitment to nurturing local talent and transforming aspirations into sustainable businesses. We anticipate a tangible positive impact on job creation and the overall quality of life for residents," Mkhize stated during a press briefing held at the Alexandra Community Centre on Tuesday.
The investment is expected to particularly benefit sectors such as retail, manufacturing, and services, which form the backbone of Alexandra's local economy. Local business owners will be able to apply for grants and loans, along with receiving mentorship and technical assistance to enhance their operational capabilities and market reach. Mr. Sipho Dlamini, a long-time resident and owner of a small tailoring business in Alexandra, expressed optimism. "For years, access to capital has been a major hurdle for many of us. This new funding offers a real chance to expand, hire more people, and improve our offerings. It’s a welcome development that could truly change the landscape for small businesses here," Dlamini commented.
The Gauteng Department of Economic Development will work in collaboration with local community organisations and business forums to ensure the equitable distribution of funds and effective implementation of the support programmes. A dedicated task team has been established to oversee the application process and provide ongoing guidance to beneficiaries. This collaborative approach is designed to maximise the impact of the investment and ensure its long-term sustainability within the Alexandra community.
